Laboratory Manager

Location: York UK

Role: Full time, permanent

We are growing and growing fast. Aptamer Group is a leading developer of next-generation molecular tools to enable innovation across the life sciences. We employ a diverse and talented team of high calibre scientists and commercial professionals located at our state-of-the-art development facility in York, UK and are looking for a Laboratory Manager to join the team.


  • Planning and organisation of workloads for the Laboratory Assistants and Laboratory Technicians.
  • Pro-actively manage the smooth running of the laboratory to deliver the required performance in order to support company objectives.
  • Reviewing and improving current practices and procedures to raise standards within an ISO9001 environment.
  • Liaise with the other departments in order to coordinate the daily running of the lab.
  • Take overall responsibility and be accountable for
    • data recording / storage and the upkeep of laboratory procedures, methods and protocols (as defined by the CTO).
    • maintaining laboratory equipment, including repairs and service contracts.
    • ensuring that all reagents and lab supplies are available when needed, to meet commercial and R&D needs.
    • controlling costs and seeking efficiency improvements.
    • managing and updating chemical inventory and Risk Group Agent inventory.
    • laboratory Health & Safety, and ensure that the laboratory operates in accordance with any Health, Safety and environmental policies, and to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors
    • ensuring that all subordinates are fully trained in line with our internal processes.
  • Implement appropriate KPIs to monitor and support continuous improvement in the Laboratory Management Team.
  • Implement a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Work closely with the Production Manager to ensure the laboratory runs efficiently.
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate project management plans and GANTT Charts, in line with Aptamer Group business objectives. Ensure that these plans are reviewed and visible
  • Maintain and support automation infrastructure and equipment.

Required Experience

  • Ideally 3+ years’ experience as Laboratory Manager in a biotechnology or medical device company with extensive experience of ISO9001.
  • Minimum of BSc honours level degree in Chemistry, Biology or Biochemistry.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt (Black belt preferred).
  • Proven track record of Continuous Improvement.
  • Team player with a can-do attitude.
  • Experience of managing Health & Safety/Environmental Systems would be an advantage.
